The floral display which I created for the recent exhibition “Flowers to Art” at the Aargauer Kunsthaus not only engaged in a dialogue with the painting Gliederfigur by the Swiss artist Karl Ballmer, but also reflected on his life. The metal tub represents his humble family background, whilst the semi-precious bowl indicates his subsequent prosperity through marriage. The artist’s interest in philosophy is symbolised by the crystal vases, his spirituality by the crystal itself. At the same time the various vessels establish the composition of the painting. The flowers not only create a colourful harmony with the painting, but also provide insight into his life: oats, delphinium, and carnations are simple flowers, whereas the rare vanda orchids symbolise a more luxurious level of existence. The fabulous intensity of colour is mirrored by the grasses and blooms, the organisation of the containers harmonises with the floral splendour to form an entity – floral and painted works of art combine to create a thought-provoking interaction between the two elements.
